Department Profile -MATHEMATICS
The Department of Mathematics, Sree Sankara College, Kalady, was established in 1955 and is affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam. Prof. Lakshmi Nataraj was the first Head of the Department. The department functions in accordance with the MGU – UGP (HONOURS) syllabus and offers an undergraduate programme in Mathematics.
Under the MGU – UGP (HONOURS) framework, the department offers Major courses and Minor courses, promoting interdisciplinary learning. In the first year, the department provides MDC courses, namely “Mathematics for Competitive Examinations” and “Applicable Mathematics”, aimed at developing analytical ability and problem-solving skills while supporting students’ preparation for competitive examinations such as PSC, UPSC, and Banking examinations.
The department also offers skill-oriented elective courses. The elective “Game Theory and Project Management” in Semester III introduces students to strategic decision-making and managerial applications, while “Operations Research” in Semester IV equips students with quantitative techniques for optimization and effective decision-making, enhancing their readiness for higher education and professional careers.
The department emphasizes holistic student development through regular PTA meetings and alumni interactions. The departmental association organizes seminars, workshops, quizzes, debates, outreach programmes, and academic celebrations, including Indian and international Mathematics Day. The department also conducts a biennial Mathematics Fest, “INSPIRIT”, which encourages academic engagement, innovation, and inter-collegiate participation.
The department is supported by an active Alumni Association, which conducts regular meetings and career guidance programmes for students.
