The Centre for Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS), Sree Sankara College Kalady, organized a thought-provoking and informative lecture programme on “Karkitaka Culinary traditions of Kerala” on August 7, 2025. The session was led by Sri Joby Prakrithy, an eminent scholar in Naturopathy and Yoga and a renowned Ethno-Botanist.
The programme offered a unique blend of traditional knowledge and scientific insight into the medicinal value of Kerala’s native plants. Sri Joby Prakrithy showcased various medicinal plants typically used during the monsoon season, elaborating on their health benefits and culinary applications. He explained how these plant-based preparations, traditionally consumed during Karkitaka, help prevent and manage common seasonal ailments, enhancing immunity and overall well-being.
The interactive session allowed students to engage directly with the displayed plants, enhancing their understanding of Kerala’s indigenous healing practices. Students enthusiastically participated, asked insightful questions, and expressed keen interest in integrating traditional health wisdom into modern lifestyles.
The programme commenced at 11:00 AM with a welcome address by Dr. Harikrishna Sharma K N, Assistant Professor and Convenor of the IKS Centre. The session was chaired by Prof. (Dr.) Anilkumar M, Principal of the College. Smt. Gopika G, IQAC Coordinator, offered felicitations. The event concluded at 1:00 PM with a vote of thanks by Dr. Rasmi Raveendran, Assistant Professor of Hindi and Member of the IKS Centre.
This initiative aligns with the Centre’s mission to revive and promote the indigenous knowledge systems of Bhārat, fostering awareness and appreciation among the younger generation.
