Sree Sankara College is situated to the adjacent regions of Malayatoor forest range & Periyar river and lowland regions, the campus is filled with an amazing biodiversity of butterflies. We carried out an evaluation to find out the biodiversity of butterflies in the college campus. We came to find out that the following species of butterflies are common in our campus. They are Blue Mormon, Common Mormon, Tailed Jay, Blue tiger, Paris peacock, Common rose, Common mime, Common emigrants, Plain tiger, Common crow, Dark blue tiger, Common sergeant and many more.
The Department of Environment Science & Management has taken an initiation in creating an asylum for the butterflies of the campus. We started the garden on the month of July and were inaugurated by Dr. Preethi Nair, Principal of the College and by Dr. Mini K.D Asst. Prof. Department of Zoology & Coordinator Bhoomithrasena in presence of the students and other faculties of the college at 11 am. We offer the butterflies an area named as “butterfly garden” exclusively for all species of butterflies. This protected area is carefully reared and maintained by the students of the dept. and monitored by faculties. This area is completely planted by both larval and adult host plants, which may provide both larval food and nectar.
We have selected the area carefully which ensure an open ground for the butterflies and carefully maintained free from plastics and xenobiotic as soon as possible. For ensuring the proper maintenance of the garden weed plants are carefully removed by plucking. In order to measure the availability of nectar properly, periodic replacement of nectar bearing flowers and plants is ensured.
We have spotting of the largest butterfly species of South India belonging to the Mormon Group. We have also spotted even the rarest South Indian species too. Butterfly garden of the campus ensures the free roaming and puddling of them. It also gave the opportunity for the students of the campus to enjoy the aesthetics of these amazing creatures.
