The Department of Hindi, Sree Sankara College, Kalady, celebrated Premchand Jayanti with great enthusiasm to commemorate the birth anniversary of the renowned Hindi novelist and short story writer Munshi Premchand, popularly known as the “Upanyas Samrat” of Hindi literature.The programme was organized with the objective of familiarizing students with Premchand’s immense contribution to Hindi literature and his portrayal of social realities through his writings. The celebration was attended by faculty members, students, and literature enthusiasts.
As part of the celebration, a special lecture was delivered by Dr. Susen Alex on “Premchand and Social Realism in Hindi Literature.” The speaker discussed Premchand’s major works such as Godaan, Nirmala, Gaban, Karmabhoomi, and several short stories including Kafan, Poos Ki Raat, and Idgah. The lecture shed light on his commitment to social justice, rural life, and the struggles of the marginalized sections of society. Students actively participated in various literary activities conducted on the occasion, including essay writing, speech competitions, and reading sessions of Premchand’s selected stories. The participants expressed their appreciation for the timeless relevance of Premchand’s literary vision and social concerns.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks, acknowledging the efforts of the organizers, faculty members, and students who contributed to the success of the event.
