The student associations ‘The Helix’ (Biochemistry) and ‘Microxia’ (Microbiology) jointly organized a charitable food fest titled “Festival de Comida” on 25th September 2024. The event was conducted with the objective of raising funds for social causes, particularly to support the rebuilding efforts in Wayanad and to assist cancer patients. The initiative received enthusiastic participation from students and faculty, making it both a vibrant and meaningful programme.
As a continuation of this effort, on 3rd February 2025, members of both departments visited General Hospital, Ernakulam, to hand over the contributions generated from the food fest. Instead of providing direct financial aid, the team chose to donate essential medicines required for the treatment of cancer patients. This thoughtful approach ensured that the support directly addressed the immediate medical needs of patients and contributed effectively to their care and well-being.
The programme served as a strong example of social responsibility and empathy, encouraging students to recognize the challenges faced by individuals battling serious illnesses as well as communities affected by natural disasters. It also promoted a spirit of volunteerism and community service, motivating students to actively participate in initiatives that create a positive social impact. The collaboration between students and faculty highlighted the importance of teamwork and collective effort in successfully planning and executing such meaningful activities. Furthermore, the initiative emphasized the value of ethical giving, demonstrating how well-planned contributions can make a more practical and lasting difference.
During the visit to the hospital, students had the opportunity to interact with healthcare professionals and staff, gaining insights into the needs and challenges faced by cancer patients. Discussions focused on the significance of providing essential medicines, the difficulties encountered in patient care, and the various ways in which students can contribute to society. This interaction fostered a deeper sense of empathy and awareness among the participants, inspiring them to continue engaging in socially responsible activities. Overall, the programme stood as a commendable effort that combined compassion, collaboration, and purposeful action to support those in need.
