The teachers and students of the UG Department of Microbiology visited the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), Ernakulam on 3rd February 2025 as part of their academic enrichment programme.
The purpose of the visit was to provide students with practical exposure to advanced research techniques and to enhance their understanding of marine microbiology and its applications. The team was warmly welcomed by the CMFRI research staff, who guided the students through various divisions of the institute.
Students were introduced to different laboratories including those dedicated to microbial biotechnology, aquaculture, marine biodiversity, and molecular biology. The researchers explained the ongoing projects on marine microbial diversity, bioactive compounds from marine organisms, and their potential applications in medicine, food, and environmental sustainability. Demonstrations on laboratory techniques and instrumentation provided the students with valuable hands-on learning experience.
The interaction session with scientists proved highly beneficial, as students gained insights into the scope of marine microbiology, current research trends, and potential career opportunities in fisheries and allied sciences.
The visit was an enriching experience that strengthened the students’ academic foundation and sparked curiosity about the role of microbiology in marine research. The Department extends its gratitude to CMFRI for their support and cooperation in making this visit highly informative and inspiring.
