The Department of Economics at Sree Sankara College has a distinguished academic legacy that dates back to 1958. Since its inception, the department has remained an integral part of the academic life of the institution, contributing significantly to teaching, research, and intellectual engagement in the field of economics.
The B.A. Economics programme was introduced in the early years of the department, and the first batch graduated in 1960, laying the foundation for a strong tradition of academic excellence. As per the latest regulations of Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, the department now offers Four-Year Undergraduate Programme in Economics under the MG-UGP framework, titled B.A. Economics (Honours).
A major milestone in the department’s development was the introduction of the Postgraduate Programme (M.A. Economics) in 1962, which expanded the scope of higher learning and advanced studies in economics within the institution.
Further strengthening its academic stature, the department was recognized as a Research Centre in Economics in 1999. This recognition marked an important phase in its evolution, enabling the department to promote research activities and contribute to the advancement of economic thought and policy-oriented studies.
Over the decades, the department has continued to nurture generations of students through quality teaching, academic mentoring, and research initiatives, thereby upholding its reputation as a vibrant centre for the study of economics.
