About the Department
The Department of Biochemistry was established in 2002, becoming the first affiliated college under Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, to introduce a postgraduate programme in Biochemistry in the self-financing sector. Since its inception, the department has been committed to providing quality education and professional training in the field of biochemical sciences.
The department is equipped with well-maintained laboratories and modern instrumentation, enabling students to develop strong practical skills and engage in research-oriented learning. These facilities support project work, experimental training, and advanced laboratory techniques, thereby providing students with valuable hands-on experience in various areas of biochemistry.
About the Subject
Biochemistry is an interdisciplinary field that integrates biology and chemistry to understand the chemical composition of living organisms and the molecular processes that sustain life. It focuses on the structure, function, and interactions of biomolecules such as proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and nucleic acids, as well as the biochemical reactions that occur within living cells.
Over the years, several specialized disciplines have emerged from biochemistry, including Enzymology (study of enzymes), Endocrinology (study of hormones), Clinical Biochemistry (study of the biochemical basis of diseases), and Molecular Biochemistry (study of biomolecules and their functions). In addition, applied areas such as Agricultural Biochemistry and Pharmacological Biochemistry have developed to address challenges in health, medicine, and agriculture.
The programme provides a comprehensive understanding of biomolecules and cellular biochemical processes at the molecular level, preparing students to become competent biochemists capable of contributing to research, healthcare, and industry.
Graduates can pursue careers in pharmaceutical and drug manufacturing industries, research and development laboratories, cancer research institutes, blood banks and diagnostic laboratories, educational institutions, environmental monitoring and pollution control agencies, public health organizations, agriculture and fisheries sectors, forensic science laboratories, cosmetic industries, and hospitals.
Eligibility
Candidates with a bachelor’s degree securing not less than 55% marks in Botany, Zoology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Biotechnology or Biophysics are eligible to apply.
The total intake for the programme is 20 seats. Admission to the merit seats is conducted through the Centralized Allotment Process (CAP) of Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam.
