Overview

The Department of Microbiology at Sree Sankara College, Kalady, was established in 2002 with the introduction of the B.Sc. Microbiology (Self-Financing) programme, in accordance with the Government of Kerala’s initiative to strengthen vocational and skill-oriented education within private aided institutions. The programme represented an important development in the academic landscape of the college, reflecting a broader transition in higher education towards scientifically advanced and professionally relevant disciplines.

Consistent with the institutional mission of promoting the educational and socio-economic advancement of the Kalady region, the Department has developed into a centre for undergraduate training in microbiology that integrates theoretical knowledge, laboratory-based learning, and professional skill development. The programme aims to cultivate scientific curiosity, analytical thinking, and technical competence in students preparing for careers in biological sciences and allied sectors.

Interdisciplinary Learning and Professional Certification

In addition to the core curriculum, the programme offers students the opportunity to pursue minor specialisations in Biotechnology and Biochemistry, enabling them to broaden their academic perspective across related scientific disciplines.

Students also undertake Ability Enhancement Courses (AEC) in languages such as English, German, Malayalam, and Hindi, supporting communication skills and global engagement.

A distinctive feature of the programme is the opportunity to obtain HACCP Level 3 certification, awarded by the Highfield Awarding Body for Compliance (United Kingdom). This internationally recognised qualification provides specialised training in food safety and hazard analysis, enhancing career prospects in the food and allied industries.
