Department Profile

The Department of Statistics was established in 1993 with the launch of the B.Sc. Statistics programme, offered alongside complementary courses in Mathematics and Computer Science. In 2020, the Government of Kerala sanctioned an aided programme M.Sc. Statistics with a specialization in Data Science. The department maintains a fully equipped computer centre, dedicated exclusively to supporting the M.Sc. Statistics and B.Sc. (Hons) Statistics students.

MSc. Statistics with Data Science Programme

M.Sc. Statistics Students are provided training in softwares like Python, R and SPSS. Our department offers programmes that combine the theory and practice of Statistics to prepare our students for successful careers in a wide range of industries. The courses of the M.Sc. Statistics programme include Measure and probability theory, Theory of probability distributions, Analytical methods for statistics, Sampling theory, Statistical computing using Python, Statistical computing using R, Estimation theory, Stochastic processes, Multivariate distributions, Testing statistical hypotheses, Design and analysis of experiments, Time series analysis, Multivariate analysis, Statistical techniques for data mining, Statistical modelling, Non-parametric statistics, Applied algorithms, analysis of multi-type data, Machine Learning, Data Visualization and Analysis of categorical data. The programme is carefully designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary for careers in fields such as data science, finance, and consulting, while also providing a strong foundation for those who wish to pursue further studies.

Internship and Placement

Every student enrolled in the M.Sc. Statistics programme is required to undertake an internship at a reputed industry or research institute and complete a project work. The department actively facilitates placement opportunities for its students. Many of our alumni have secured positions in leading companies such as TCS and Accenture. Each year, placement drives are conducted by TCS Atlas, TCS NQT, TCS Ignite, and Cognizant, providing students with valuable career pathways in reputed organizations.

B.Sc. (Hons) Statistics Programme

The B.Sc. (Hons) Statistics programme offered by our department integrates courses with both theoretical rigour and practical relevance, enabling students to address real-world problems across diverse domains. With a specialization in Data Analytics, the program equips learners with cutting-edge skills and knowledge.
Students have the opportunity to study areas such as Data Analysis and Statistical Computing using R, Python, and JAMOVI. The curriculum also includes training in Machine Learning and Data Science, ensuring graduates are well-prepared for the demands of modern analytics.
