About the Department
The Department of Biotechnology at Sree Sankara College, established in 2005, is a vibrant interdisciplinary centre committed to excellence in scientific education, innovation, and research. Since its inception with self-financed undergraduate programmes, the department has consistently focused on applying biotechnology to address critical challenges in healthcare, agriculture, environmental sustainability, and related sectors.
Programme Offered
Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUGP)
The programme is offered under the academic framework of Mahatma Gandhi University.
It is thoughtfully designed to provide students with a strong theoretical foundation in life sciences, complemented by intensive laboratory training and skill development. With a focus on research-oriented learning, the programme encourages scientific inquiry through practical exposure and project-based study. The outcome-based and interdisciplinary curriculum equips graduates with the academic knowledge and professional skills required for higher education, research, and industry careers.
Academic Curriculum
The B.Sc. (Honours) in Biotechnology curriculum integrates classroom instruction, laboratory training, seminars, and project work to deliver a comprehensive learning experience. It ensures a balanced combination of theoretical understanding and practical exposure, enabling students to grasp fundamental concepts while developing essential technical competencies.
Core areas of study include Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Animal Biotechnology, Recombinant DNA (r-DNA) Technology, Immunology, Enzymology, Bioinformatics, and Biophysics. Together, these subjects build a strong conceptual framework in modern biotechnology and prepare students to apply scientific principles in research, industry, and emerging technological domains.
Laboratory and Skill Development
The programme emphasizes extensive hands-on training in modern biotechnological techniques, ensuring that students gain practical proficiency alongside theoretical knowledge. Laboratory sessions introduce students to key methods such as Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), gel electrophoresis, DNA isolation and sequencing, microbial culture techniques, and bioinformatics tools.
Through structured experiments and guided training, students develop technical accuracy, analytical skills, and confidence in handling advanced laboratory equipment.
The programme culminates in a Capstone Research Project, allowing students to apply their knowledge to real-world research problems. This experience enhances critical thinking, problem-solving ability, and research aptitude, preparing graduates for higher studies and professional roles in biotechnology and allied fields.
