The Department of Biotechnology, under the SMART scheme, Sree Sankara College, Kalady, organized Biofiesta 2024–2025, a seminar on the topic “Bioprospecting Mangrove Yeast: Unlocking Biotechnological Potential through Bioprocess Technology” on 7 March 2025.
The resource person for the session was Dr. K. Manjusha, Assistant Professor, Department of Marine Biosciences, Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies.
The seminar aimed to introduce students to the vast biotechnological applications of mangrove-associated yeasts and the innovative role of bioprocess technology in exploring and utilizing these microorganisms for industrial and research purposes.
In her talk, Dr. Manjusha highlighted the ecological significance of mangrove ecosystems and the unique characteristics of yeasts isolated from these environments. She elaborated on their potential in producing enzymes, bioactive compounds, and other value-added products. The session also emphasized how bioprospecting approaches can contribute to the sustainable utilization of biological resources and support the growth of the biotechnology sector.
The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from all three batches of Biotechnology students, who actively engaged in discussions and interacted with the speaker. The interactive nature of the session enabled students to clarify doubts, explore practical applications, and gain insights into emerging areas such as marine biotechnology and microbial bioprospecting.
The seminar was highly appreciated for its relevance, clarity, and engaging delivery. It not only broadened the academic perspective of the students but also motivated them to explore research opportunities in marine and microbial biotechnology.
Overall, Biofiesta 2024–2025 served as an enriching academic platform that fostered scientific curiosity and encouraged students to explore innovative research avenues in biotechnology.
