The Department of Biotechnology, Sree Sankara College, Kalady, in association with Primordia LifeSciences Pvt. Ltd., organized a two-day hands-on training programme on “Basic Techniques in Molecular Biology” on 17th and 18th February 2025. The programme aimed to provide students with practical exposure to essential molecular biology techniques and to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and laboratory applications.
The training comprised both theoretical and practical sessions, introducing students to key concepts such as preparation of buffers, understanding molarity and related calculations, nucleic acid extraction methods, and the principles of agarose gel electrophoresis. The fundamentals of Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), including its components and thermal cycling conditions, were also explained in detail.
During the hands-on sessions, students actively performed experiments such as isolation of DNA and RNA, plasmid DNA extraction, agarose gel electrophoresis, and PCR setup and analysis. These practical experiences enabled them to understand the significance of each technique and develop confidence in handling laboratory procedures and equipment.
The training programme was highly beneficial, enhancing students’ technical skills, analytical thinking, and problem-solving abilities. It also provided them with valuable exposure to modern laboratory practices, thereby preparing them for higher studies, research, and career opportunities in the field of biotechnology.
