The Department of Biotechnology at Sree Sankara College successfully organized its annual science exhibition, “Bio-Fiesta Expo 2023,” on 27 June 2023. The event was conducted with the objective of showcasing the scientific talent, creativity, and innovative potential of students.
The exhibition was inaugurated by Dr. Anitha Abraham, Drawing and Disbursing Officer (DDO) of the college. She was joined by distinguished faculty members including Dr. Mini K. D, Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology, and Dr. Manju T, Assistant Professor, Department of Physics and IQAC Coordinator. The dignitaries appreciated the efforts of the students and emphasized the importance of fostering a scientific mindset among young learners.
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from around 280 school students from various reputed institutions in the region. In addition, undergraduate, postgraduate, and research scholars from multiple departments of the parent institution actively took part, contributing to the grand success of the exhibition.
More than 50 exhibits were presented by the students, including working models, still models, and live demonstrations spanning diverse areas of science. A highlight of the exhibition was the live demonstration of enzyme immobilization techniques, which attracted significant attention. The exhibits were explained in a simple and engaging manner, ensuring accessibility for all visitors.
A notable presentation addressed the socially relevant issue of the Brahmapuram waste management crisis in Kerala, titled “Playing with Fire: Rethinking Waste Processing in Kerala.” This exhibit emphasized the role of biotechnology in developing sustainable waste management solutions.
The exhibition also showcased the vast potential of recombinant DNA technology, illustrating its applications in healthcare, agriculture, and environmental management. Through models, charts, and animated presentations, students effectively demonstrated how genetic engineering contributes to improved crop yield, disease resistance, and the production of essential therapeutic proteins.
In addition, a special stall highlighted emerging trends in biotechnology, focusing on innovations, startup opportunities, and industry growth. The display emphasized India’s strong potential in the biotechnology sector, driven by its young workforce and expanding market.
Overall, Bio-Fiesta Expo 2023 served as a dynamic platform for nurturing scientific curiosity, promoting interdisciplinary learning, and inspiring the next generation of scientists and innovators.
