As part of the MDC programme, first-semester B.Sc. Microbiology students undertook a field visit to Suvarnodhyanam Biological Park on 9 November 2024. The visit aimed to provide students with practical exposure to biodiversity, conservation strategies, ecosystem management, and sustainable development practices.
The park, known for its rich ecological diversity, houses a variety of specialized sections that showcase different plant groups and conservation concepts:
- Arboretum: Featuring more than 150 species of endemic trees
- Herbal Garden: Home to over 200 medicinal plant species
- Orchidarium: Displaying more than 100 species of orchids
- Fernarium: Containing over 40 species of ferns
- Nakshatra Vanam: A unique collection of 27 plants representing the 27 astrological birth stars
- Sacred Groves: A representation of traditional village forest ecosystems
In addition, the park includes several other attractions such as a rock garden, bambusetum (with multiple species of bamboo and reeds), sandalwood grove, rose garden, children’s park, and a collection of traditional flowers used during the Onam festival.
The park features diverse ecosystems including wetlands, forests, and grasslands, offering students a comprehensive understanding of ecological interactions and habitat diversity. The conservation initiatives observed—particularly the Nakshatra Vanam, Arboretum, Herbal Garden, Fernarium, Sacred Groves, and Bambusetum—were highly impressive and educational.
Students also had the opportunity to observe a wide range of plant species, including medicinal and ornamental varieties such as Arundina graminifolia, Aerides crispa, Acampe praemorsa, Bulbophyllum fisheri, Bulbophyllum sterile, Coelogyne stricta, pineapple orchid, and Dendrobium nobile, among many others.
Overall, the visit to Suvarnodhyanam Biological Park was an enriching and informative experience. It provided valuable insights into biodiversity conservation, plant diversity, and ecosystem management, enhancing the students’ understanding beyond classroom learning.
