On 18th September 2023, the Department of Biotechnology, Sree Sankara College, Kalady, organized an Orientation Programme on “Careers and Fellowships in Biotechnology” at 11:00 AM in the Mini Seminar Hall, SF Block. The session was delivered by Dr. Sreeja Narayanan, DBT/Wellcome Trust Early Career Fellow at Cochin University of Science and Technology, who shared her expertise and experiences to guide students on academic and research opportunities in the field of biotechnology.
The programme focused on creating awareness among students about the wide range of career paths available in biotechnology, particularly in research and higher education. Dr. Sreeja Narayanan provided detailed insights into various national-level fellowships available for students aspiring to pursue research careers. These included major fellowships such as DBT Junior Research Fellowship, CSIR-UGC Junior Research Fellowship, ICMR and ICAR fellowships, INSPIRE Fellowship, and GATE-based opportunities in premier institutes like IITs and NITs. She also highlighted other important schemes such as JGEEBILS, National Fellowship for Scheduled Caste Students, Maulana Azad National Fellowship, Savitribai Jyotirao Phule Fellowship for Single Girl Child, and FITM-AYUSH fellowships.
The session emphasized the eligibility criteria, application procedures, and preparation strategies required to secure these fellowships. Students were also introduced to the importance of competitive exams, research aptitude, and academic excellence in building a successful career in biotechnology. The speaker encouraged students to actively explore research opportunities and stay updated with emerging trends in the field.
The programme was highly informative and beneficial, providing students with a clear understanding of the pathways available for higher studies and research in biotechnology. The session also motivated students to pursue careers in research by making them aware of the financial and academic support systems available through various fellowship programmes. The event was coordinated by Smt. Sujayalakshmi K.V, Dr. Renjusha Menon, and Ms. Jeena Susan Joseph, whose efforts ensured the successful conduct of the programme.
